Consider Serving Tennessee in the ASHP House of Delegates

The Tennessee Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) is seeking Tennessee
pharmacists to serve as Delegates and Alternate Delegates to the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) House of Delegates for the meetings of the House.
ASHP has apportioned four Delegates to Tennessee, with an additional four or more
Alternate Delegates.

There is a tiered two-year term of service for Tennessee Delegates to the ASHP House.
Under this structure, each individual elected will serve one year as a Junior Delegate,
followed by one year as a Senior Delegate. This promotes greater continuity of policy
support, strengthens the mentoring process for new Delegates, and ensures that two
Tennessee Delegates, as Senior Delegates, have prior experience representing Tennessee
in the ASHP House.

Nominations are now being sought for Junior Delegates and Alternate Delegates.

Qualifications to Serve: Individuals serving as Delegates must be pharmacists
practicing in Tennessee and also must be ASHP members.

  • Junior Delegates: From among those who volunteer or are nominated to serve, the
TSHP Nominations Committee will select candidates for the upcoming online
election, for a two-year term of service. The two individuals receiving the most votes
will serve as Junior Delegates this upcoming cycle and will matriculate into the role
of Senior Delegate for their second year of service.
  • Alternate Delegates: Four individuals on the ballot who are not elected as Junior
Delegates, but receive the next highest amount of votes will be asked to serve a one-year term as Alternate Delegates.

Once elected, Junior Delegates and Alternate Delegates will be contacted by TPA staff on
behalf of TSHP, regarding supplying information required by ASHP.

Attendance Required: Senior and Junior Delegates are expected to attend all required
events and sessions of the ASHP House of Delegates, listed below. In addition, Junior
Delegates this cycle will be expected to attend all required events and sessions of the next
year’s cycle for the ASHP House of Delegates, as Senior Delegates.

  • Regional Delegate Conference – Delegates will be expected to attend the
Regional Delegate Conference in late April. Registration details for this meeting are
expected to be available in January.
  • ASHP Summer Meeting – The ASHP House of Delegates will meet in person on
two separate occasions during the ASHP Summer Meeting in June. Delegates will
be expected to participate in all House of Delegates sessions.
  • Virtual House of Delegates Meetings – Delegates will be expected to attend any
virtual House meetings, usually occuring in March and November.

Per the TSHP Travel Policy, TSHP does provide support for the Tennessee Delegates to
ASHP in terms of travel expenses that will not otherwise be reimbursed by their employer:

“The Society will pay the transportation expense for each of the official delegates to the Annual Meeting of the House of Delegates of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The Society will pay for up to four nights lodging and up to $30/day to cover all other expenses (food, local ground transportation, tips,
etc.) Transportation to the meeting will be reimbursed at either the coach airfare or standard mileage by vehicle. Beyond these specific expenses, the Society will pay for ASHP Annual Meeting registration at the pre-registration member rate. Total expenses exceeding $1,500 will require approval of the Executive Committee.”

Per the TSHP Travel Policy, TSHP does provide support for Tennessee Delegates to ASHP
who participate in an ASHP Regional Delegate Conference:

“Delegates who attend the Regional Delegate Conferences annually may be
reimbursed by the Society for transportation expense and up to two night’s lodging expense. Alternate Delegates are not eligible for reimbursement unless economy is achieved by sharing travel with a Delegate.”

Any member interested in serving a two-year term (as a Junior Delegate this
upcoming cycle and as a Senior Delegate in the next year’s cycle) should complete
this form indicating your interest in serving, NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 21.
Delegate elections will occur in January. Members are also encouraged to nominate a
colleague to serve.
